Exploring Kananaskis
If you’re dreaming of alpine lakes, majestic peaks, and that sweet scent of pine drifting on a mountain breeze, chances are Banff is already at the top of your bucket list. And I get it—Banff is stunning. But let me let you in on a little secret: you don’t have to go to Banff to experience that mountain magic. In fact, if you’re after fewer crowds, equally jaw-dropping scenery, and a more serene adventure, look no further – it’s time to explore Kananaskis.
We traveled to Banff National Park in fall this year. We opted to save a little money by not staying in Banff. We chose to stay in Canmore. Thank goodness we did! We had so many recommendations to do a day trip around Kananaskis – it didn’t disappoint!
Here’s why you might want to rethink your plans and choose the lesser-known (and in some ways, better) alternative.
1. Fewer Crowds, More Nature
Let’s face it, Banff is no hidden gem anymore. Especially during peak seasons, it feels like half the planet decided to visit at the same time. Kananaskis, on the other hand? It’s like stumbling upon your own secret slice of paradise. You get the same rugged beauty—towering mountains, crystal-clear lakes, and lush forests—without the endless lines of cars and tourists.
In Kananaskis, you’ll find more solitude on the trails, more chances to soak in the peaceful sounds of nature, and more space to snap that perfect mountain photo without 50 people in the background. If you crave quiet moments in the wilderness, Kananaskis is your place.
One of our favorite stops was Wedge Pond! If you are arriving in the fall, do NOT miss the beautiful Aspens around this small pond. It is stunning.
2. Budget-Friendly Adventures
Banff’s popularity has its price—literally. From park passes to parking fees, accommodation rates, and restaurant prices, Banff can put a dent in your wallet. Kananaskis, by contrast, tends to be much more budget-friendly.
There’s a simple Kananaskis Conservation Pass, but aside from that, you’ll likely spend less on everything from camping spots to dining options. It’s the same spectacular Rocky Mountain experience, just a little easier on the bank account.
3. Unbeatable Hiking Trails
Don’t let anyone tell you that the best hikes are only in Banff. Kananaskis is packed with world-class trails that rival anything in Banff National Park. Whether you’re up for a casual lakeside stroll or a more challenging summit trek, Kananaskis delivers.
Here are the details for each of the hikes:
Rawson Lake: A serene hike through lush forest that opens up to a pristine alpine lake nestled beneath towering cliffs. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic. If you’re feeling adventurous, go towards the back of the lake and climb the ridge line for epic views of the lake and surrounding mountains.
- Elevation Gain: ~300 meters (984 feet)
- Distance: 8.9 km (5.5 miles) round trip
Ha Ling Peak: If you’re craving that bird’s-eye view, Ha Ling is a challenging but manageable hike with breathtaking panoramic viewsof the surrounding peaks and valleys.
- Elevation Gain: ~800 meters (2,624 feet)
- Distance: 7.2 km (4.5 miles) round trip
Ptarmigan Cirque: Ideal for those wanting to explore alpine meadows without a grueling climb. Think wildflowers, babbling creeks, and jaw-dropping views—with far fewer people around.
- Elevation Gain: ~230 meters (755 feet)
- Distance: 4.5 km (2.8 miles) round trip

4. Less Commercial, More Authentic
Banff is a tourist mecca, which comes with both pros and cons. While Banff is great for finding high-end restaurants, luxury hotels, and all the tourist amenities you could ask for, Kananaskis feels a bit more like the real deal. It’s wilder, more rugged, and a little less polished—just the way I like it.
In Kananaskis, you’ll find cozy mountain lodges, locally run cafés, and campgrounds that don’t feel overcrowded. It’s the perfect mix of comfort and authenticity, where you can fully immerse yourself in nature without feeling like you’re in a resort town.
5. Wildlife Sightings
Banff is known for its wildlife, but Kananaskis can offer equally impressive animal encounters—without all the people. Whether it’s spotting a moose along the roadside, catching a glimpse of a black bear in the distance, or watching herds of bighorn sheep grazing, wildlife in Kananaskis is abundant.
One specific off-the-beaten-path place to check is HWY 40. We drove the Smith Dorrien Highway hoping to spot some wildlife, but luck wasn’t on our side this time—no bears, no elk, not even a sneaky squirrel! But honestly, the drive alone is worth it. The scenery is unreal, with rugged mountains, sparkling lakes, and those endless forest views. Even if the animals are hiding, the peaceful vibe and stunning backdrop make it a must-do. You never know—your next trip might be the one where you catch all the action! It is an unpaved road, but it is in EXCELLENT shape and you should be fine to drive this no matter what type of car you are driving.
6. Adventure Without the Rush
In Kananaskis, there’s a slower pace that’s hard to come by in the hustle and bustle of Banff. Want to linger by the lake without rushing off to avoid the crowds? Or maybe enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your lodge before hitting the trails? You can do that here. There’s no rush—just the steady, calming rhythm of the mountains.
Whether you’re out paddle-boarding on Lower Kananaskis Lake, tackling a day hike, or just soaking in the views from your campsite, there’s a sense of calm that comes from the quieter, less-visited corners of the Rockies.
7. Epic Stargazing
When the sun sets in Kananaskis, the real show begins. Far from the bright lights of Banff and Canmore, the night skies in Kananaskis are nothing short of spectacular. Without light pollution, you’ll see more stars than you ever thought possible.
On clear nights, the Milky Way stretches across the sky, and if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the northern lights dancing above the peaks. It’s the kind of experience that will make you feel small in the best way possible.
So, if you’re considering Banff but want a quieter, more affordable, and equally breathtaking alternative, Kananaskis is calling your name. You’ll get all the epic mountain vibes with fewer crowds, less hassle, and a more authentic wilderness experience.
During the winter, you can keep an eye out for the aurora. It appears to be ramping up in 2024-2025 and should put on a wonderful show this year! One minute you’re looking at the quiet, snow-covered peaks, and the next, the sky lights up with streaks of green and pink, dancing over the mountains. It’s freezing, but when those lights appear, you forget all about the cold. Since Kananaskis is far from city lights, the aurora shines even brighter. If you’re lucky enough to catch it, it’s one of those moments where nature just leaves you speechless.
Pack your bags, lace up your boots, and get ready to explore one of Canada’s most underrated gems. Trust me—you won’t miss the crowds of Banff. If you want more Kananaskis ideas, check out this visitor guide!
